Is Semen Nutritious?

The other day, a friend sent me an IG post claiming that swallowing semen is good for your health. I responded with the appropriate 🙄 — but I’ll admit, misogyny aside, I was curious… is there any truth to it?

So I did what any responsible adult would do: I turned to Google. (Technically Google Scholar, but same same.)

The Semen = Antidepressant Claim

One of the first things I stumbled on was a 2002 study titled “Does Semen Have Antidepressant Properties?”

If you've seen articles claiming that semen is a mood booster, this study is probably what they’re referencing. But let’s be clear: the actual research didn’t isolate semen ingestion as a cause of improved mood. It found that women in heterosexual relationships who had condomless sex with a trusted partner reported lower levels of depression.

Translation: there was a correlation—not proof that semen has magical antidepressant powers.

Also, do we really need a peer-reviewed study to tell us that being regularly intimate with someone you trust can make you feel good? Didn’t think so.

The Other (Bolder) Claims

Some articles floating around on regular ol’ Google will tell you that ingesting semen leads to whiter teeth, boosted brain function, and less anxiety.

Try as I might, I couldn’t find actual research to back any of that up. Trust me, I went deep. Like, "late-night rabbit hole of pubmed and Reddit threads" deep.

What Semen Is Made Of

Let’s get nerdy for a sec.

Semen is made up of minerals, enzymes, and proteins—including things like zinc, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, and fructose. So in theory, yes, semen is “nutritious” in the same way that one almond might be.

But considering the average ejaculation is about one teaspoon or less, it’s not exactly a superfood smoothie.

Bonus Fun Fact: Semen Allergy is a Thing

Oh, and here’s something you might not have heard: some people are actually allergic to semen. The medical term is human seminal plasma hypersensitivity, and while it’s rare, it can cause symptoms like rashes, swelling, pain, or irritation after exposure.

And yes—it can affect all genders. So if someone’s reacting badly, it’s worth checking out.

So… Is Swallowing Semen Healthy?

Here's the honest answer:
Semen does contain trace nutrients, but it’s not a reliable or significant source of them. There’s no conclusive evidence that ingesting it will improve your health, boost your mood, or help you ace your next exam.

But, if you’re engaging in consensual, joyful oral sex with a trusted partner—and it feels good for both of you? That is good for your health. Pleasure, connection, and playfulness are powerful wellness tools. So is clear communication and mutual respect.

TL;DR:

Is semen nutritious? Technically yes, but not in any way that should change your dietary plans.
Is it bad for you? Not unless you’re allergic.
Should you swallow it? Only if you want to.
